John Kean (1756 – May 4, 1795) was an American merchant, banker and member of the Continental Congress from South Carolina who was the first in a long line of American politicians from his family. He notably served as a Delegate to the Congress of the Confederation and as the first cashier of the Bank of the United States in Philadelphia. McClurg was a delegate to the Philadelphia Convention, 1787, to write the U.S. Constitution. Though he participated in its construction, he did not sign the document. McClurg was a Virginia physician educated at the College of William and Mary and at the University of Edinburgh. He practiced medicine in succession in Williamsburg and Richmond, Virginia and served as mayor of the latter.
